For safety always use 3 way light bulbs in lamps that have 3 way sockets.  The bottom of a 3 way bulb is made to properly connect to the 3 way socket.  Failure to do so can result in electrical shock, over heating and possible fire.  

LED ( light emitting diode ) bulbs are now available in 3 way replacements.  When replacing used bulbs I recommend buying LED. The cost has gone way down and they last twice as long as CFLs and10 times longer than incandescents.  They use 90% less electricity and give off 90% less heat.  LED bulbs are available in 3 basic white colors SOFT OR WARM WHITE, BRIGHT WHITE AND DAYLIGHT.  Daylight bulbs are used mostly in commercial applications.  Daylight emits a bluish light and is not very flattering. The blue light waves can be harmful and when outside will attract flying insects.  Daylight CFLs will attract the most insects.
